Our next event is Summer Stages, an acting and directing workshop, open to the public and free of charge.
Summer Stages is designed to allow anyone at any experience level to try acting in a friendly, and comfortable situation. We want to make it easy for people to participate. You don't have to quit your day job!
This summer, we have selected an assortment of scenes from the comedies of Neil Simon (Barefoot in the Park, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Chapter Two, The Gingerbread Lady, Plaza Suites, The Prisoner of 2nd Avenue, The Sunshine Boys , Rumors and Proposals are all Neil Simon shows.) Those volunteering to direct will cast their scenes from a pool of volunteer actors, and arrange their rehearsals through the summer at their convenience, probably for one hour, twice a week. Each small cast sets their own rehearsal schedules. We hope this will be flexible enough to allow everyone to participate, whether they are old friends, or friends we haven't met, yet.
Because each scene is only 10 to 15 minutes long, there will be plenty of rehearsal time for scene analysis, character study and acting fundamentals. All the groups will come together for one performance, August 19th, 7:00 PM at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center. This performance is also open to the public, and serves as our Annual Meeting and Membership Drive.
Interested adult actors can join us at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center on June 9th or June 10th at 6:30 PM. No prepared readings are necessary.
Anyone interested in directing a scene should plan on attending both sessions. AACT has also arranged for a guest director from Auburn University to lead a short director's workshop two evenings in June, dates TBA. This is a unique opportunity to learn directing techniques from a theatre professional. You do not have to direct a scene for this summer to participate in the directing workshop, but we hope you will. We'd like to hear from our interested directors as soon as possible!
